Our freshly made poi is frozen just before we ship to you.The staple starch of the traditional Hawaiian diet, is made from taro, an ancient root crop grown throughout the Tropics. Early Hawaiians not only used the taro plant for food, but also utilized the various parts for medicinal purposes; treating ailments ranging from insect bites and fevers to heart problems and stomach disorders. Many of our customers eat poi when on chemo therapy, as it soothes nausea in some individuals.
Preparation: To soften frozen poi, add water as directed on the outside of the bag (one cup per pound). Place in microwave and stir every minute or place container in double broiler over stove top. Use a blender, smoothie maker or hand-held mixer to mash out lumps and make into a paste. You may want to add a little sugar to sweeten this tart food. Poi may be frozen for as long as you need.
