Our freshly made poi is frozen just before we ship to you, in order to stop the fermentation process.

Poi is a traditional Hawaiian dish made from taro root, which is steamed, mashed, and then pounded to create a smooth, paste-like consistency. The process of making poi involves first cooking the taro root until soft, then mashing it with water to reach the desired thickness. The result is a mildly flavored, slightly tangy, and starchy paste that can vary in consistency, ranging from thick to thin, depending on personal preference.

Poi is often served as a side dish with a variety of Hawaiian meals, particularly to balance out richer, more savory dishes like lomi salmon or kalua pork. It is known for its subtle, earthy flavor, and it’s considered a cultural staple in Hawaii, often eaten with the fingers (traditionally using the thumb). As a highly nutritious food, poi is rich in carbohydrates and can be eaten plain or mixed with sugar or salt for added flavor. It’s a key part of Hawaiian heritage and is often served at luaus, family gatherings, and special celebrations.

Preparation: To soften frozen poi, add water as directed on the outside of the bag (one cup per pound). Place in microwave and stir every minute or place container in double broiler over stove top. Use a blender, smoothie maker or hand-held mixer to mash out lumps and make into a paste. You may want to add a little sugar to sweeten this tart food. Poi may be frozen for as long as you need.

Hawaiians believe that eating poi connects them to the ancestral history of the islands. It is a staple in the Hawaiian diet. Fresh poi is naturally sweet, but it can become sour over time.
